Simon Harris, Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland, stated that since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, Afghan women and girls have faced severe hardship and suffering.
According to Harris, women have been stripped of their rights to education, employment, and social participation, and now live behind closed doors under extremely difficult conditions.
He highlighted that the Taliban’s use of extrajudicial courts, public beatings of women, torture, and arbitrary arrests of civilians have made life unbearable for many Afghans.
Harris called on the Taliban to soften their stance and respect the rights of the people if they seek international legitimacy
