Former President of Sri Lanka Arrested by Government

On Friday, August 22, Reuters news agency reported that Sri Lanka’s former president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on charges related to financial crimes.
According to the report, Wickremesinghe had appeared before authorities to clarify allegations of financial corruption but was taken into custody by the CID.
The charges include alleged misuse of state funds—specifically, accusations that he used government money to travel to London for his wife’s graduation ceremony.
It is noteworthy that he is the first former president of Sri Lanka to be arrested by the government in recent times.
