Iran Demands Its Water Share from the Taliban

In a recent report by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, Deputy Minister of Water and Management Affairs Mohammad Javanbakht stated that, based on water rights agreements, Afghanistan is obligated to provide Iran with 820 million cubic meters of water annually. He noted that this year, the amount of water received has been significantly reduced.
He emphasized that this reduction is a clear violation of the existing treaty, and Iran must obtain its full water entitlement from the Taliban.
According to Javanbakht, Tehran is making every effort to secure its rightful share of river water, and the issue has now become one of Iran’s top foreign policy priorities.
On the other hand, the Taliban have responded by saying that they have not deliberately withheld water from Iran, but that the decrease is due to drought conditions
