According to a statement released Monday by the Taliban’s Supreme Court, five individuals—including one woman—were publicly flogged in Farah province on charges of engaging in illicit relationships. The statement said the punishment was carried out in front of a public gathering, with the accused receiving between 20 to 39 lashes each. Additionally, they were sentenced to imprisonment ranging from six months to three years.
The United Nations has expressed concern over the increasing use of corporal punishment by the Taliban in Afghanistan. It stated that physical punishments in public settings have risen this year compared to the previous year, and has called on the Taliban to halt such practices.
