Amnesty International has welcomed the establishment of an independent investigative mechanism by the United Nations Human Rights Council to examine the situation in Afghanistan, calling it a significant and vital step toward justice.
The organization emphasized the importance of effectively implementing this mechanism.
Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, stated that given the ongoing culture of impunity in Afghanistan, the creation of this mechanism is a crucial move toward accountability for past and present crimes, and must be pursued in accordance with international law.
The organization also stressed the need to expose the crimes committed by the Taliban and to bring those responsible to justice.
