Matthew Sorensen: Afghanistan Is Not Safe for Afghan Refugees to Be Returned

Matthew Sorensen, head of policy at the U.S.-based World Relief organization, has expressed concern over the U.S. deportation of Afghan refugees who held temporary protected status (TPS) in the United States.

He stated that since the Taliban are currently in power in Afghanistan, the lives of Afghans who cooperated with U.S. forces are at risk under Taliban rule.

Sorensen noted that although the U.S. government has officially deemed Afghanistan unsafe for its citizens, Afghan refugees are nonetheless facing the threat of deportation back to the country.

According to him, the decision to return these Afghan refugees to Afghanistan at this time is not appropriate.

It is worth mentioning that the U.S. State Department announced that as of July 22, the special law granting temporary protected status (TPS) to tens of thousands of Afghans who assisted U.S. forces has officially ended.
