Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior has confirmed that it is in discussions with the Pakistani government regarding the fate of Afghan nationals currently in Pakistan awaiting relocation to Germany.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated during a press conference that the German government is reviewing the situation of Afghans who are part of Germany’s relocation program but remain stranded in Pakistan, amid an intensified deportation campaign targeting Afghan refugees.
He acknowledged that some Afghans approved under Germany’s admission program have been detained by Pakistani authorities and forcibly returned to Afghanistan.
Talks between Berlin and Islamabad are ongoing, and both sides are working toward a resolution.
Germany’s admission program for at-risk Afghans was launched by the previous government in October 2022. However, following the electoral victory of the conservative party earlier this year in February, the program was suspended, and the new administration has expressed intentions to terminate it
